Celebrating 30 Years of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo’s annual group exhibition is returning for its 20th year featuring the latest works of four contemporary artists: Shimizu Hiroki, Kawada Satoshi, Usui Ryohei, and Shoji Asami.
With its subtitle “Kofuku Island” and theme focusing on islands as undulating surfaces, the artists are inspired by invisible connections that bind our world.
The MOT Collection, debuting on the same day, will display pieces from the museum’s approximately 5,800 works ranging from modern to contemporary art. The collection is an early celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo’s opening.
On the first floor, the exhibition “Seven Beauty in the Bamboo Grove” will focus on seven female artists. In addition to Saori Mado (Akutagawa) and Toshiko Takagi, who are celebrating their 100th birthdays, Eiko Urushibara, Donge Kobayashi and Akiko Maemoto will also be on display.
On the third floor, a special exhibition featuring artwork by Leiko Ikemura and Mark Manders will be on display titled “Leiko Ikemura, Mark Manders: Rising Light/Frozen Moment.” Ikemura is renown for expressing creation and transformation through vibrant colors and images. Manders’ use of space capture tense still moments.
