The port city of Yokohama has long been known as a place where different cultures intersect. Now there’s a new ryokan in Yokohama that celebrates the eclectic appeal of the city on the 160th anniversary of its port.
The inn is called Prostyle Ryokan Yokohama Bashamichi, and it’s centered around the idea of “achieving tranquility in the dark and sharpening your senses.”
In modern life, we’re used to brightly-lit spaces, but this inn reproduces the subdued lighting of old with traditional gas lamps, which first appeared in the Japan via Yokohama in 1872. The interior is also decorated in dark, relaxing colors.
There are 94 rooms with 11 types, most of which are traditional tatami style. The rooms mix Japanese and western, just like the city of Yokohama itself.
There are also modern conveniences, like free wifi, an included smartphone which can be used outside the hotel during your stay, and 300 channels of TV.
