Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is located on the same site as the private residence of an Edo period feudal lord called Kiyonari Naito, who was a vassal to shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa.
The area was completed as an imperial garden in 1906 and has been a leader in horticultural innovation in Japan ever since.
Its 58.3 hectares (144 acres) makes it one of the largest green spaces in Tokyo and the area features a French formal garden, an English landcape garden, and a Japanese traditional garden.
There are over 10,000 trees here, including the first tulip trees, Himalayan cedars, and bald cypresses to be planted in Japan.
This spacious garden is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon exploring the various areas and plants within.
