A fun dining experience in a bright and pleasant environment, Crowley’s California Kitchen serves sumptuous and flavorful dishes that are prepared using seasonally fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Located in Tokyo’s bustling district of Shibuya, the place only just opened at the beginning of December but is already creating quite a buzz. It is owned by Jefferey Bischoff, a guitarist with the band TILT who also runs its sister shop Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe in California along with Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.
With links to the entertainment world, it is unsurprisingly a very trendy spot but that doesn’t mean it’s only for young hip artist-types. Crowley’s is a reasonably priced family-friendly eatery with a menu that has a broad demographic appeal. It also boasts a fantastic mix of Japanese and Californian flavors.
There’s an extensive list of dishes on offer including a variety of appetizers such as spinach salad with cranberries, walnuts and blue cheese, potatoes au gratin with roasted garlic, and a pumpkin soup with yogurt, basil and croutons. We went for the shrimp and maitake mushroom with wasabi aïoli and it tasted heavenly.
Our main: A fried chicken sandwich with Japanese coleslaw and curly fries was even better, though the chicken with waffles and maple syrup, and ravioli of the day also looked very tempting. A hugely satisfying meal ended with a homemade chocolate cheesecake and strawberry sauce which was simply divine.
