Andon Ryokan is Tokyo’s sole contemporary inn and winner of an architectural prize for its striking, glass facade exterior. At night, illuminations make the building resemble an andon, a traditional lantern. Throughout the ryokan you can find some of the owner’s antiques on display. The rooms are comfortable and simple. Artist Mie Ishii’s funky tile art adorns the walls of the ryokan’s jacuzzi to add a special touch.
Andon is located north of the touristy area of Asakusa, off the beaten path near the infamous Edo era red-light district Yoshiwara.
Don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the Tokyo skyline from the rooftop.
