Head out to Roppongi for another kind of all-nighter: art, art, and more art.
For its fifth edition (although cancelled in 2011 due to the earthquake/blackouts), the event has this year picked the theme of “Trip – Witness today’s transformation into tomorrow”. The centerpiece is a lighthouse monument by art director Katsuhiko Hibino, and he has commissioned artists to give form and action to themes relating to time and space, and thoughts for the disaster-stricken regions.
In addition to art exhibits, the Roppongi streets will be turned into a stage for art, for one night only: images, art installations and live performances by today’s most prominent young artists should keep you busy till dawn.
Throughout the night, various parties will be held in surrounding cafes and restaurants, which give an opportunity for artists to chat up one another and exchange ideas. Regular exhibitions will also stay open all night, so this may be your last chance to catch Aida Makoto’s Monument for Nothing.
Although the exhibits last all weekend, the core event strictly follows the sun’s schedule, starting at 17:55 (right at sunset) and ending at sunrise, 5:39 – just in time to catch those first trains back to bed.
