Three handball players were allegedly involved in the gang rape of a 19-year-old woman at the Malaysia Games, an incident that shocked the country’s sports community.
The woman said she was repeatedly assaulted at the Sukma Games Village at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang, according to Zolkples Embong, national sports council director-general.
The female official with the Federal Territories girl’s handball team had been drinking alcohol with several handball players before she was raped.
Police detained three male handball players, aged between 18 and 19, in connection with the alleged crime.
Sieh Koh Chi, secretary general of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, said he was “shocked by the July 3 incident.
“Swift investigation must be carried out,” he told AFP, after it was found the athletes involved had smuggled alcohol into the games village.
Former Asian Football Confederation general secretary Peter Velappan said the “outrageous” incident had tarnished the Malaysian sports, AFP reports.
He demanded “severe punishment” for the perpetrators.
The Malaysian Games is the largest sporting event in the country. It serves as as the basis for the selection for the Malaysian contingent to the Myanmar SEA Games in December.
