The results of the magazine’s 2016 Quality of Life survey have been released, and Tokyo comes out tops for the second time in a row – followed by Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, and Munich.
Last year, we reported on how Tokyo claimed the title thanks to its “defining paradox of heart-stopping size and concurrent feeling of peace and quiet.” The magazine’s criteria include things like crime rates, environmental well being, and infrastructure, along with more intangible elements like the commitment to culture and the closing times of bars. This year, they’ve also focused on what the city has to offer when night falls, with editor in chief Tyler Brûlé saying: “Where other cities talk a good game about being 24/7, Tokyo delivers.”
In a short video (watch below or on their website) that focuses on Tokyoites’ night-time antics, “Monocle” compliments the city on offering a wealth of after-work options from restaurants and bars to shops and sporting activities: “Night-time is the chance to relax, when the neon sparks to life and the city shows a different face.”
