This summer, discover the beauty of goldfish with Tokyo Kingyo Wonderland, an event held at Sumida Aquarium from July 10 to August 31.
Aside from about 1,000 live goldfish from 20 different varieties, the event also features 10 kinds of goldfish-shaped Japanese candy and 150 goldfish lanterns, each handmade by craftsmen in Yanai, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which give off a pleasing golden glow in the dim light of the aquarium.
Tokyo Kingyo Wonderland also includes special goldfish-themed snacks, like a colored soda served in a fish bowl (which you can take home), soft-serve ice cream, and even sparkling red wine, on which customers can receive a discount if wearing a yukata.
Finally, visitors can participate in a workshop in which they place red, black and white chips onto a goldfish-shaped matte to create a work of art. This workshop, which runs from 11am to 4pm each day of the event (except 7/30) looks like it will be a hit with children.
Additionally, look out for the Sumida Aquarium’s Penguin Fireworks show, which uses projection mapping to display fireworks underwater. The show runs twice a day, at 6:30pm and 8:30pm, and lasts about eight minutes.
