Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, and the temperatures are rising, so we’ve compiled a list of events perfect for a day out with family or friends. This week’s list includes some fun outdoor events such as the yearly Tokyo Yamathon or Yoyogi Thai Festival and some inspiration for those of you wanting to treat your moms for their special day this Sunday.

Mother’s Day Lunch at Grand Hyatt Tokyo
During the month of May, diners can show appreciation for mom by treating them to a special lunch course at Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s Keyakizaka teppanyaki restaurant. Chef de cuisine Yoshinobu Honda will prepare a premium tasting course featuring ingredients such as caviar, foie gras, abalone, Ise-ebi lobster and two types of wagyu beef.
Thai Festival 2018
Enjoy traditional Thai cuisine from a wide array of food stalls, as well as booths offering goods and crafts. Learn more about Thai culture, find out about NGOs and charity projects, and enjoy live entertainment and stage performances including dance and traditional music.
Design Festa Vol. 47
12,000 participants from all over the world have the opportunity to show, perform and sell their work, whether amateur or professional. Art, illustration, design, crafts, music, dance, live painting and fashion are just a sample of the creative outputs you can expect to enjoy. Hino Shinsengumi Festival
This two-day festival in Hino celebrates the roots of Japan’s last samurai force, the Shinsengumi. This annual festival sees samurai enthusiasts flock from far and wide to take a step back in time and witness the event’s grand parade, where over 400 people march in period costume. The festival also holds a variety of other events and entertainment all over the Takahatafudo and Hino-Shuku areas, including kimono contests, sword demonstrations, traditional music performances, festival booths and more.
Cinco De Mayo 2018
Eat, drink, dance and enjoy the Mexican and South American flavors with live entertainment and a traditional craft market. Cinco de Mayo means “May 5” in Spanish, a day celebrated in Mexico to commemorate the Battle of Puebla, when a small team of Mexican fighters defeated a large French army. With food stalls from Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, Colombia and more, you can get your fill of tacos, burritos, anticuchos, quesadillas and empanadas. Of course there will also be a selection of drinks such as margaritas, mojitos, pina coladas, Cuban libres and other tropical cocktails to keep you in the spirit.
Stand-Up Tokyo Presents Brian Aylward
Legendary Canadian comedian Brian Aylward brings his hilarious stand-up show to Tokyo for the first time. His award-winning show “Big in Asia” is sure to bring barrels of laughs and especially resonate with anyone who has ever lived overseas. Don’t miss the chance to be amused and entertained by Aylward’s fantastic observational comedy!
Turner and the Poetics of Landscape
One of Britain’s leading landscape painters, Joseph Mallord William Turner created expressive works, skillfully depicting stormy seas and towering mountains as well as peaceful countryside scenes. His art influenced many — and with over 2,000 paintings and over 19,000 drawings and sketches, there was much to be inspired by. This exhibition features 120 of his works in watercolor, oil, and print.
Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC)
One of the biggest electronic dance festivals in the world, EDC returns to Japan this weekend after its successful debut here last year. Headlining the opening day is duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, two brothers from Belgium who ranked as the number one DJs in DJ Mag’s top 100 list in 2015. They are the final act on what promises to be an exciting day of music. Other big names to look out for include American electro house musician Steve Aoki and Dutch DJ Don Diablo.
