If you’re an avid Tokyo nightlife goer and have been dancing until dawn countless nights in Shibuya, you’re probably familiar with Control, a regular party with DJs and bands variously tearing up Tokyo’s dancefloors and live houses. Control was started by three music fans hailing from the UK who have been spinning their favourite tunes in various venues, mostly across Shibuya – and making people dance – for a couple of years now.

This time around, to celebrate their second birthday, the Control boys are inviting one of Tokyo’s coolest and most talked about bands, The Plasticzooms, (pictured above) to take the headline slot. If you haven’t heard them, think My Bloody Valentine meets Bauhaus, with a blend of late-70s-goth tinged and post-punk.

Another noteworthy band you may want to check out is Nile Long (formerly The Brixton Academy), who will add a bit of Motown, soul and funk to their British-indie influences.

Expect the regular DJs to spin acid house, ‘Madchester’ and 80s-90s house and indie anthems, music that will bring back memories for many – whether you went to high school in the 1970s or the 1990s.

If you’re looking for a fun dance party and cheap way to see some of Tokyo’s up-and-coming live bands, head to nightlife central in Shibuya and arrive early to catch the must-see live sets.
