Tokyo International Film Festival Giveaway
You could win tickets to a special screening which preceeds the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Kaneto Shindo, who died in May at the age of 100, was one of Japan’s most prolific and celebrated movie directors. To celebrate his life, the organisers of the 25th Tokyo International Film Festival, which takes place in October, are holding a special memorial screening of his final film, Post Card.
The screening will be followed by a talk from his son, Jiro Shindo, looking back at the great director’s life and works. This is a great, and rare opportunity to see and learn about a piece of Japanese film history: the film is subtitled in English and there will be a live translation available at the talk.
Shindo was born in Hiroshima in 1912 and some of his most famous films dealt with issues relating to the atomic bomb which was detonated above the city in 1945. Post Card is a story which discusses the “devastation of war which goes beyond the death of a soldier.” A World War 2 soldier, entrusted with contacting his fallen comrade’s family, meets the dead man’s wife and finds a tragic life away from the battlefield. The film won the Special Jury Prize at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival.
