With advertisements featuring the likes of Sofia Coppola, Kim Gordon and Chloe Sevigny, there is no doubt regarding the brand’s cool factor.

Marc Jacobs emerged in the early nineties, launching a ‘grunge’ collection in 1992 for Perry Ellis that eventually got him fired from his job as creative designer. He then went solo, and the rest is history. To this day, Marc Jacobs is best-known for making the grunge look mainstream, with his signature flannel shirts and thermals paired with Doc Martens, layers over layers, and crocheted skullcaps- obviously sporting a hefty price tag.

Over the years, his designs grew a little less grunge, but the label always kept its hip appeal. For the first time ever in Japan, a retrospective of the work of Marc Jacobs, dubbed ‘The Iconic Showpieces Collection’ is presented at IDOL space in Aoyama. Expect a selection of show pieces from the brand’s archives, exploring its (albeit short) history.

You can view the infamous Juergen Teller ad campaign featuring Victoria Beckham in a huge Marc Jacobs carrier bag, and bits of footage of celeb-packed front rows at Marc Jacobs’ runway shows. Playful aspects have been added for guests: you, too can pretend to be an ex-Spice Girl and re-create the ad by hopping into a special photo booth. The exhibit is free, so make sure you pop in if you’re in Aoyama.
