Kissho monyo are traditional auspicious motifs which have long existed in Japan. Akomeya Tokyo, a lifestyle shop with locations in Ginza, Shinjuku and Omiya, has created six new kissho monyo motifs based on animals, plants and nature that are believed to bring good fortune.
Forty items featuring these motifs (fat sparrow, Mt. Fuji, daruma, papier-mâché dog, rabbit and sunrise) are available. Items include tea towels, furoshiki wrapping cloths, writing paper and more.
Each motif has a different meaning. For example, a daruma-themed item is good for a housewarming present, because the daruma is believed to expel evil. These gifts might serve as the perfect way to introduce someone to Japanese culture — or to bring some good luck to yourself!
