This February 26, the island of Izu-Oshima, which is technically a part of Tokyo, will hold a special festival with camellia lanterns.
The festival is organized largely by three industrious students from Bunkyo Gakuin University, who are working to help bring tourists back to the island, which suffered a landslide in 2013.
The students’ plan is for the lantern festival to spread far and wide on social media, attracting more people to the island. A similar festival held last year attracted 200 visitors with its 500 camellia-shaped lanterns. This year that number is being doubled to 1,000 to light up the island even more brightly.
