DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow
At which, we see the fruits of the initiative whereby the Japanese government funds local artists to work and study abroad.
The Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs has been helping young artists from many different disciplines head overseas to spend time with masters in their respective skill, and since the 90s their work has been shown together here in Tokyo.
The impressive glass-windowed structure known as the National Art Center, Tokyo – just outside Nogizaka Station or a short walk from the Midtown area of Roppongi – plays host to the 2013 show of what is officially known as “The Achievements of the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists provided by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.” A little long-winded, perhaps, but it does what it says on the tin.
This is in fact the 15th edition of the show and as well as ceramics, sculpture and installation work there are paintings such as the one above by Sai Hashizume, who was born in Tokyo but went to Germany under the program.
