Parco, one of Shibuya’s most iconic buildings, is currently undergoing reconstruction, and is set to reopen in 2019.
In the meantime, as not to waste all that sweet real estate, Parco has decided to transform their temporary enclosure into an art wall, and its first exhibition features art from none other than Akira, the iconic manga-turned-anime from famed artist Katsuhiro Otomo.
The 2 by 1.5-meter piece, a collaboration between Otomo and collage artist Kosuke Kawamura, depicts Akira character Kaneda on his signature motorcycle with the text “A.D. 2019.”
It’s a perfect match, really: Akira, the post-apocalyptic manga classic, takes place in 2019, the same year Parco is set to reopen, and it even predicted the Olympics would take place in the city in 2020 (it did also predict the city would be taken over by a maniacal dictator with psychic powers, but we’re in the clear on that front so far).
The art wall will feature rotating works until 2019, so stop by regularly to see what pops up next.
