An interactive exhibition of iconic Norwegian design from the 1900s is stopping briefly by Tokyo – don’t miss it.
What do you know about Norwegian design? Focusing on the 1940-1975 era, the Norwegian Icons exhibit will introduce you to what has been happening in the last century on that side of the world, design-wise. Not only can you admire the pieces, but you can also purchase them.
The exhibition is presented by our favourite cocktail bar/furniture showroom Fuglen (if you haven’t been yet, make sure to try this perfect spot- where else can you buy the table you’re sitting at, sipping on your drink?), in collaboration with art dealer Blomqvist, which handled the paintings of Edvard Munch for the first time.
The aim of this event is to introduce and revalue Norwegian furniture nationwide and worldwide, as its existence has recently diminished – perhaps blame it on a certain giant from neighboring Sweden? The exhibition was held in Oslo back in January, and after a pit stop in Tokyo, it will continue to New York in the autumn.
In addition to all the vintage pieces, you can pick up a 240-page catalog created by Mats Linder, the author of “Norwegian Design Furniture 1940-1975”, which is also available in Japanese, custom-made for this exhibit. A Fuglen pop-up shop is also set to open at Isetan Shinjuku, so you can taste their wonderful coffee from the long-established Oslo cafe.
The venue of the exhibition, Daikanyama Hillside Terrace, is also scheduling a Norwegian Fair during that time, so on top of viewing Norwegian furnishings, you can also sample some local food and drink.
