Post-punk musician turned visual artist Jad Fair is presenting his paper-cutting art in Tokyo, in a tailor-made exhibit.
Offbeat and unique gallery Hiromart is presenting yet another must-see artist, this time the frontman of lo-fi band Half Japanese, Jad Fair, inspired into art by his talent for creating album sleeves, the gallery says. His group was founded back in 1974, when Fair and his brother took turns playing a small drum set, singing and experimenting with different instruments. Fast forward to thirty-something years later, and the band has a solid cult fan base which at one point included Kurt Cobain – in fact, Half Japanese opened for the East Coast leg of Nirvana’s In Utero tour.
When he’s not busy collaborating with the likes of Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, Moe Tucker, Teenage Fanclub or Yo La Tengo, Fair spends time creating complex paper cuttings and drawing pieces that have been displayed in galleries all over the world. Books collecting his illustrations have been published not only in Japan, but in the US, the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Portugal.
This is the second time Jad Fair will display his work at Hiromart Gallery, following his favorably received show in Japan held in 2011. This particular show will feature his paper-cuttings especially made for this event. The public is welcomed to the opening reception with Jad Fair to meet him at 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 9th to view and chat about his recent artworks.
