Shortly after Fuji Speedway announced that it would no longer be part of the F1 calendar, Suzuka Circuit signed a deal to host the Japanese Grand Prix for three years starting this year. Suzuka was originally designed in 1962 by John Hugenholtz as a test track for Honda, and is the only racing circuit in the championship to include a figure eight in the track, making it one of the most difficult racing circuits in the world. The past two Formula One races in Japan have been held at Fuji Speedway, but the financial crisis paved the way for Suzuka to become the sole host for the next three years. Suzuka is one of the oldest remaining tracks on the Grand Prix circuit and has a long history of world championships won on location.
