Akiba Green Festival turns Akihabara on to eco-awareness
If you’re looking for some last-minute weekend ideas, why not venture out to Akihabara?
I must admit, I’m not a reader of manga, I don’t play computer games, I don’t understand the appeal of high-tech electronics, I don’t partake in cosplay, I don’t particularly pine for maid-uniformed girls to serve me coffee and nor do I enjoy the sounds of scantily-clad J-Pop girl groups. At least, that’s the image I have of Akihabara, and that’s what kept me away from this neighborhood most of my Japan life, except for a few curious exploration outings.
Thankfully, my image of Akihabara changed a little bit when I heard about the Akiba Green Festival – an eco-friendly event for, well Akihabara regulars. It’s a chance to learn more in depth about recycling, reusing and reducing, through various workshops, fun quizzes, a stamp rally and “green-themed discussions.” Maybe someone will work out who left all those lights on?
In addition, a flea market will be held – perhaps a chance to trade some of those electronics – as well as a neighborhood cleanup on Sunday afternoon (15:30-16:30), to keep those streets shining. We love an event with a good cause, so think green and head out to Akihabara to scope it out. (Vivian Morelli)
