Taga Choko was a representative painter of Genroku-era Edo (1688-1704), the flourishing city and its inhabitants. He earned the wrath of the shogunate, however, and was later banished to Miyakejima for 12 years.
In 1709, when the ruling shogun was replaced, he was granted amnesty and allowed to return to Edo, whereupon he took the name Hanabusa Itcho. 2009 marks the 300th anniversary of Itcho’s remission.
