The anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion debuted over 20 years ago, but as anyone living in Tokyo can attest, the hit series never really went away. It’s served as the inspiration for big-screen remakes, pachinko machines and all kinds of licensed merchandise, including this latest item, which may take the cake as the most unusual — or, depending on your perspective, the most inspired.
The item in question: the Tweezers of Longinus: a pair of tweezers modeled after Evangelion’s Spear of Longinus, a McGuffin which appears near the end of the series. The tweezers are available worldwide via Tokyo Otaku Mode, Inc.
Not just a playful tribute to a beloved anime franchise, the Tweezers of Longinus are entirely functional. Produced by Japanese craftsmen, they are ideal for grabbing fine fibers, including hair and thorns caught in fingers, and they’re longer than the average pair of tweezers, allowing for better grip.
The tweezers come in two varieties: stainless steel, which retails for ¥4,388, and titanium, which goes for ¥10,500 (tax and shipping included). Both models include a red stand, which Evangelion fans will recognize as modeled after the cores of the series’ Angel invaders.
The Tweezers of Longinus are up for preorder through August 31, and ship in September.
