Ebisu is on a roll. Hot on the heels of new opening Shake Shack Ebisu comes Green Brothers, a salad bar restaurant that takes inspiration from New York’s healthy takeaway cafés.
Launched in July 2016, it’s just a few minutes’ walk from Ebisu Station, and features communal wooden tables that create a casual lunch café atmosphere, and a long counter at the back displaying a wide variety of ingredients – delivered fresh from farmers – to mix and match. Standard salads on the menu include nine different varieties, and three seasonal dishes that change every three months. You can also order a custom-made salad by choosing your own mix of ingredients, which are quickly put together by the friendly staff.
Prices range from ¥1,000 to ¥2,000, with the custom-made salads being on the upper end, especially if you choose to top your dish off with something like shrimp or chicken. Drinks on offer include ginger lime fresca, kale green tea, organic coffee, and craft beer.
When we visited, we tucked into a Green Brothers Mexican salad, which was surprisingly spicy, but delicious and filling. Is it the best salad we’ve ever had? Probably not, but sitting inside Green Brothers with their mist cooling system on a hot summer’s day, and knowing we’re truly getting our greens instead of yet another bowl of rushed ramen definitely added to the feeling of satisfaction.
We’re also really hoping that Green Brothers manages to reach their goal of opening 50 shops by 2020, so that lunch breaks in Tokyo can truly take on a healthier glow.
