Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is one of the most respected post-impressionist painters of his generation including Van Gogh and Gauguin. He is mainly known for painting bohemian life in late 19th century France. Even those who aren’t familiar with his work have probably seen his paintings re-appropriated in an artsy cafe, or in the form of a retro poster. When the Moulin Rouge cabaret opened its doors in 1889, Toulouse was commissioned to paint a series of posters. His other famous works include posters for Parisian nightclubs and paintings of Yvette Guilbert (headlining singer at Moulin Rouge) and dancer Louise Weber (creator of the French can-can). Toulouse’s work depicts both the modern and decadent bohemian life, capturing an exciting and provocative time in French culture.
